Zijerveld (subsidiary of FrieslandCampina) was looking for a new partner for the redevelopment of thé online cheese platform in the Netherlands: Kaas.nl. After a tender round among several agencies, their choice fell on MBU! We could start designing and building the new Kaas-website!
The current website was outdated and looked very messy and gray. In addition, it was built on a closed source CMS. This made the content difficult to manage and the backend was not designed in a user-friendly way. Zijerveld wanted a new and fresh design and a backend in which managing content would be a “piece of cake”.
Because the majority (70%) of the visitors came in via mobile, and this percentage is also increasing, we started designing the website mobile first. Next we upscaled the designs for iPad Portrait, iPad Landscape, Laptop and Desktop.
We started with the logo and developed the site into a fresh new webdesign that is all about the ultimate cheese experience: full of visualization, overview and dynamics. The user must be informed and inspired about the world of cheese and also be impressed by the design.
Feel free to scroll back and forth in the examples below!
Kaas.nl featured hundreds of cheeses, recipes, cheese platters and cheese creations. Besides of that there was also a blog. So there was already a large database of content. This data should not get lost. We have migrated the complete database in the new backend, under the corresponding custom post types. After this we built a clean url structure and implemented a redirect plan to keep the SEO-value that was generated in Google.
A good search function is a must have for this database. That is why we have built a custom search engine that can search super fast in all different categories. As soon as you type in the search bar, the most relevant items are immediately displayed by means of autocomplete. In these results you can easily switch between the different product groups. So easy.
One of the problems of the old Kaas.nl was that the backend was not user-friendly, and that they had to submit a ticket for every basic adjustment. We have set up a user-friendly backend based on WordPress. As a result, managing product pages, recipe pages, blog pages, etc. has now become a piece of cake.
We do not use templates. We also use as few plugins as possible when we build websites. This allows us to keep our freedom of movement and create unique and clean code. Thus, future problems with updates are minimized. This is how we have also built the Kaas.nl website. Which has resulted in this beautiful website.
Curious? Have a look.
